Paper Landscapes Series, 2004-2005

With the "Paper Landscapes" series, sculptures are created out of crumpled, pierced and cut paper to evoke the Southern California landscape. From oilfields to freeway interchanges, cul-de-sacs to the Hollywood sign, the southern California landscape has been used as a space for speculation and as a projection screen for desire. By taking still photographs of the paper sculpture I wish to both deepen the sense of illusionary space and to return the work back to a piece of paper, back to a surface with the capacity to keep desire in suspense indefinitely.
